New for Summer 2024 - Drawing and Painting Islamic Geometric Patterns at OPEN SOUTHALL!

In these sessions, you will learn to construct Islamic Geometric patterns found in architecture or manuscripts from around the Islamic Lands. Each month, different pattern from different corner of the Islamic world.

Starting with a plain piece of paper, step by step we will draw layers of lines and circles using a compass and straight edge. From this underlying grid a pattern will emerge. We outline, trace and transfer the pattern to watercolour paper, to be coloured using watercolour pencils & paints:

Ancient Tools x Medieval Patterns x Contemporary Colours

Some are able to complete a painting in this in the time, others prefer to ease the pressure and finish off at home. If you do wish to finish, let me know so I can advise you on the size of your piece, colours and help you to complete your painting.

All are welcome, no experience is needed and all resources & materials are provided for attendees aged 14+.  We always have a wonderful mix of beginners and experienced geometers.

The patterns can be painted repeatedly, trying out different colour schemes and materials. If you’re not sure which resources to use at home, there's plenty for you to try out at the workshop. I also have a list of recommendations you can check out.

Drawing geometric constructions & patterns by hand is both a satisfying & absorbing process as much as it is a challenging and frustrating one. Somewhere in amongst these qualities, we feel such joy & wonder. We surprise ourselves with the beauty and complexity we create on a blank page with just a compass, straight edge and mark maker. It’s a process that needs our full attention and so empties our headspace of any of the stresses that we carry around otherwise. A process that connects us to humanity throughout time, from the Sumerians, Babylonians and Greeks to the Islamic Golden era to the Geometry and proportions of the Renaissance.
